Sparks 2 Stanzas Week #00: Here Lies Love

The first week of Sparks 2 Stanzas is just a taste of what it will be. I wrote a poem with a prompt I found online to start it off.

What happens to love when its body is gone?

A prompt I found from @raeonpaper on Instagram.

Here Lies Love

What happens to love

when it’s body has vanished

only vapors left behind

of late night conversations

souls entwined as love sprouted

within our ribs and derma

The clock chimes

in an empty chest cavity

where our promises turn to dust

as our bodies keep up momentum

aimlessly lurching away from

each other as our

painful wounds still gush

Gravestones litter the place

we used to lay and kiss

now grave robbers come knocking

trying to steal away our future

trying to replace what we once had

like it was just nothing

To answer the question

posed up above

when the body is gone

with the person you love

the maggots squirm around it

dirt caresses it as it lays

where the gravestone stands

as dark as the night

when we first met

it shall remain there

for the rest of our days

Rotting and decomposing

as we let the robbers take

our bodies and use them

however they would like

and the love we had

stays buried deep

underground

If you dig up our love

you’d see it break

when it sees our bodies

moving on, for we did forsake

all those promises

we made to each other

on that dark October day

I saw this prompt in a list on Instagram for October and it caught my eye. After going through a breakup in May this prompt was interesting to me because I have been listening to a lot of music about what happens after love is gone etc.

I tried to write a poem about the bodies moving on without the love and the love being buried in the cemetery, and then thought of the idea of the “grave robbers” being the people who the lovers date after the breakup.

“we let the robbers take our bodies and use them however they would like”

This line is me trying to tie in sex with new people in our bodies with the love left buried, but our love would break if it ever knew.

I had a lot of fun writing this one, despite it being a bit sad. Let me know your thoughts on it!
