Sparks 2 Stanzas #02: Cold Burning

We are already in week 02 of my new series Sparks 2 Stanzas. I received two sparks this week which were both very intriguing.

Sparks submitted

  1. The patience of a spark
  2. Chilly and warm at the same time

Chilly and warm at the same time

A prompt submitted by my friend Abby Cochran over on Instagram

Cold Burning

One foot out from under

the blanket while I sleep

your arms around me

holding me close while

you dream so deep

The leaves have changed

and so have you

you smile warmly but

your words they aren’t

as sweet

It’s too cold for you here

you complain as you dress

the Ohio winters are too harsh

and the summers make you melt

what a bipolar state of living

it’s really such a mess

Thinking back to when we met

you used to look at me with such heat

now I’m lucky if I get to see you

your kisses are cool and frigid

like our feelings are nothing but liquid

You swallow them with your coffee

each morning in your boxers

the grass outside covered in frost

similar to the past we’ve lost

I wear your sweater in the bed

just wondering where we went wrong

the soft yarn against me warm, reassuring

that you actually care despite my yearning

Stepping out to the porch to say hello

your coffee mug sits there all alone

the inside still left burning

but the mug itself cold

to the touch

I feel the tears

returning

I love this prompt. There is so many different directions I could have taken with it. The weather in Ohio for instance has been chilly and warm since it’s bipolar. People can be chilly and warm at the same time also. I decided to try to write a poem about both the weather and a lover being chilly and warm at the same time.

It’s a sad poem, but I think it turned out well. I named it Cold Burning because I looked up “chilly and warm at the same time” and it brought up stuff about nerve damage, or neuropathy, and that it was called “cold burning”.  Let me know your thoughts on this one below!
